The Complete Guide to Wedding Pizza Catering

Menus, timelines, service styles, venue access and dietary planning for couples considering live wood-fired pizza at their wedding.

Wedding couple sharing slices of pizza

Wedding pizza can be casual, but it does not have to feel informal. When the food is made on-site, the buffet is presented deliberately and the service follows the reception timeline, pizza can carry a full dinner just as confidently as a traditional catered menu.

Olive Wood Pizza has served weddings and related celebrations across Southern California since 2011. Those events include intimate backyard ceremonies, estate receptions, industrial lofts, museums, ranches, wineries, beachfront settings and venues with detailed load-in requirements.

The strongest wedding pizza plans begin by deciding what job the pizza needs to do.

Where pizza fits into a wedding weekend

Rehearsal dinners and welcome parties are a natural fit. The live oven gives arriving families something to gather around, and continuous service works well when guests do not all appear at exactly the same time.

Cocktail hour can use pizza as one element alongside tray-passed appetizers, grazing displays or other vendors. Small slices allow guests to sample without committing to a seated meal.

Reception dinner can be pizza-only or a broader Italian buffet with salad, hot pasta, fire-roasted vegetables, meatballs, appetizers and dessert. For formal receptions, presentation, staffing and guest flow matter as much as the menu.

Late-night service brings fresh food back into the room after dancing has started. Because the oven is live, guests receive pizza made at that moment rather than food that has been held since dinner.

Multi-wave weddings can schedule pizza around different moments: wedding-party arrival, cocktail hour, dinner and late night. These events require a custom service duration and production plan.

Buffet service or family-style?

Olive Wood's standard wedding service is a continuously replenished buffet. Pizzas are stretched, baked, cut and placed on display in small batches, which keeps them hot and lets guests choose among several varieties.

Family-style pizza service is available for weddings of 50 or more guests for an additional $6 per guest. It requires extra service staff and a venue layout that allows the team to deliver pizza to dining tables efficiently. Salads, pastas and other courses can be planned with the service team based on the event format.

Family-style is not automatically better. A buffet can create movement, variety and interaction with the live-fire experience. Family-style can eliminate a dinner line and keep a seated reception visually composed. The timeline and floor plan should determine the choice.

Building the wedding menu

A balanced pizza menu starts with familiar options. Classic Cheese, Pepperoni and Margherita give children, traditionalists and lighter eaters recognizable choices. Signature pizzas then bring more personality through combinations such as All the Meats, Pepperoni Jalapeño, OBG, Garlic Mushroom, Pesto Chicken, BBQ Chicken and rotating seasonal selections.

Olive Wood's approximately 10-inch pizzas are cut into six slices. The team plans more than one pizza per contracted guest so everyone can try multiple selections. That allowance remains in place even when the menu includes salads, pasta and sides.

For a complete dinner, couples commonly add a salad and pasta or choose the Premium Event package with pizza, Caesar salad, Penne Marinara and a fire-roasted side. The Best of Olive Wood package extends the experience with appetizers and dessert platters over a longer service period.

Premium pizzas, charcuterie, grazing tables and passed appetizers can elevate cocktail hour or create more visual abundance without moving away from the central pizza experience.

Dietary planning without making guests feel separate

The final menu should account for vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, pork-free, beef-free, halal-friendly and kosher-style requests. Kosher-style service is not certified kosher.

Gluten-free crusts are prepared in individual pans, and the team uses separate peels, screens, cutters, gloves and preparation procedures. However, wheat flour is actively used in the same operating environment. Airborne flour and other cross-contact cannot be eliminated, so Olive Wood cannot describe the setup as certified celiac-safe.

Couples should collect serious dietary and allergy information before the final-count deadline and share it with the caterer. Clear labeling and advance planning are much better than trying to improvise during reception service.

Planning the timeline

Most Olive Wood packages include 90 minutes or two hours of continuous service. A larger wedding or reception with a long dinner period may require additional time.

The caterer should know when guests will begin eating, whether tables are released together or in groups, when speeches and dances occur, and whether the couple wants food available through those moments. A precise timeline prevents the kitchen from peaking while guests are seated for a toast.

The final guest count and menu are due seven days before the event. That deadline gives the team time to finalize dough production, ingredients, staff, equipment and transportation.

Venue access and placement

The oven operates outdoors, although the buffet and guest dining may be indoors. Rolling ovens normally need a flat, hard-surface route at least 36 inches wide with no steps. A suitable ramp or elevator may solve some access challenges.

Trailer ovens require a safe drive-in route, turning space and legal parking for the full service period. Their operating footprint is generally equivalent to one or two standard parking spaces.

Olive Wood brings its operational prep tables and mobile-kitchen equipment. The host, venue or rental company supplies buffet tables or another suitable serving surface. This distinction allows the production equipment to leave when service concludes while remaining food can stay available.

The planning team should confirm:

  1. Oven route and measurements

  2. Approved outdoor operating position

  3. Parking and load-in time

  4. Fire-safety or venue rules

  5. Buffet-table location

  6. Indoor-to-outdoor guest flow

  7. Coordinator and venue contacts

  8. Certificate-of-insurance requirements

How much does wedding pizza catering cost?

Olive Wood Pizza wedding packages currently start at $1,250 for 25 guests. A 50-person Pizza Plus One package begins at $2,100, while the Premium Event package begins at $2,750. Larger and more complete menus scale with the guest count and service plan.

Olive Wood does not add a wedding markup. Pricing is based on the same operating inputs used for any other event: guest count, menu, staffing, timing, equipment, travel and logistics.

There is no service or administrative charge, and standard staffing is included. Local sales tax is additional and gratuity is optional. Enhanced service, including family-style delivery or tray-passed appetizers, carries the associated additional cost.

Questions couples should ask before booking

  1. Is every pizza made at the wedding?

  2. How many pizzas are planned for the confirmed guest count?

  3. What equipment and staffing are included?

  4. Can the caterer maintain output if all guests eat at once?

  5. How will dietary requests be labeled and handled?

  6. What access does the oven require?

  7. Who provides the buffet tables, linens and china?

  8. Are service, staffing, travel or administrative fees added later?

  9. Can the caterer work directly with the planner and venue?

  10. Is the business licensed and insured?

A wedding meal guests actually want to eat

Couples often choose pizza because it feels joyful and familiar. The live-fire version adds theater: guests see dough stretched, smell the olive wood and watch each pizza leave the oven. The professional work happens behind that experience - capacity planning, timing, safe setup and coordinated service.

Olive Wood Pizza can support the rehearsal dinner, welcome party, wedding dinner, cocktail hour or late-night service. Tell us where pizza fits in your celebration, and we will build the menu and service plan around it.
